Abstract

Due to increased amount of feed stuffs that should be ground for increased animal feed mixture production and, consequently, increased energy consumption, directly influencing production costs, a hammer mill should obviously be used more rationally. A hammer mill is the most commonly used grinding machine and a big energy consumer. Energy consumption of a hammer mill and the quality of grinding is significantly influenced by the state of its working elements (hammers). In this paper energy consumption of a hammer mill was measured and specific energy consumption was calculated when grinding corn and soybean meal (11-14 % moisture) related to the state of working elements (hammers). After it was determined, that working elements (hammers) were worn-out were grouped into three different groups: new, half worn-out and worn-out hammers. Energy consumption (kWh/t) was determined by measuring electricity consumption of the electric motor for running the working elements of the hammer mill. The results of this investigation show that the more the hammers are worn out, the more energy is needed when grinding corn and soybean meal.
