Abstract

After the »pastoral« era, there followed an explosion of folk religiosity
in all areas. It seems that some basic human need for the sacred inspires and gives impulse, in most cases, to this contemporary revival and propagation of folk religion. It is for this reason that, in spite of all sociological theories and political expectations, folk religion remains a unique and unreducible sacral act. Folk religion is characterised by the following traits: communality, emotional accent, vividness, subjectivity, autochthonism, intuition and irrationality. Specially worth mentioning is the phenomenon of the miraculous which is constantly present in folk's religion. Within that context the miraculous is a cipher of a higher and incomprehensible reality.
