Abstract
Paper's subject – Material Science & Engineering with Application Overview – encloses a wide area. Basic elements of material science and engineering – composition, structure, processing, features and application characteristics – define paper's subject, structure and work methodology, thus connecting fundamental sciences on one side to society needs, i.e. engineering as an applied science on the other. Iron and its alloys are in the focus of all consideration, as basic materials with the widest use, well suited due to the simple carbon influence correlation of composition, structure, and processing to features and application characteristics. Material overview includes carbon and alloyed steels, with an accent on materials used in application in shipbuilding and seafaring. Wide application of all carbon steels for ship hull, engine, boiler and larger portion of ship equipment manufacture is the reason for an equally broad overview containing compositions, structures, features, processing and applications. Modest of application of alloyed steels, caused by economic reasons alone, has directed their overview at a special group – super alloys, shown and described separately and thoroughly.
In this paper a synergy between fundamental sciences and engineering, as an applied science, i.e. composition, structure, processing, features and application characteristics, in material science & technology is given in a simple and illustrative manner.
