Understanding Units
Gerhard F. Hasel
; Andrews University, Berrien Springs, Michigan, USA
Abstract
Identifying words and sentences is fairly simple and something taught
in school from the early grades on. Determining a unit is not so simple. May we suggest that a unit is a larger whole made up of a series of sentences that, in turn, make up a particular thought, an aspect of a larger thought or chain of thoughts. Units ultimately form a larger whole. They contribute in the understanding of the smaller parts and, in a spiraling way, of larger whole of which they are a part. In this article the
author defines and classifies units and provides numerous examples
how they function in the biblical text.
