Abstract

The paper presents and analyses the impact of the Jugoplastika factory on the economical and social life of the inhabitants of the island of Šolta, as well as on the ecology of the island. The plant for the processing of plastic masses started with production in 1959, and at its peak (1985-1990) employed more than 60% of the island’s total population. The paper is based on the ethnographic research
carried out among the retired factory workers, the analysis of the archival documents and objects from the former factory, and the interviews with the workers employed at a currently active plant for the processing of plastic masses. The experience of the local people is put in the context of stratification of economical sectors in the course of the 20th century.
