Abstract

The paper approaches giftedness as a pedagogical problem. A research was conducted with the aim of establishing whether Split primary school Croatian language teachers differ in the perception of personal (in)competence when working with gifted students. This takes their experience and working internship into account. It was established that only working with gifted students contributes to an experience of greater competence. This points to the necessity of aquiring relevant knowledge and the development of skills and abilities which the teacher will readily apply to working with the gifted. To make this come true, teachers have to be trained to work with gifted students. This process has to start during college years. On the basis of teacher testimonies (about what contents should the training contain) it was established that college program should incorporate: basic cognitions about giftedness, appropriate methods and forms of working and examples of practice. The results point out a lack of training and the need of inducing seminars about the pedagogy of working with children with special needs. This should involve all teaching studies in order to lay the foundations for developing positive attitudes towards giftedness, with the indispensable opportunities to develop skills and abilities for future work with gifted students.
