Abstract

The aim of this research was to establish the degree of mathematical knowledge among first-year students of the Faculty of primary education and to show the role of language of mathematics in mathematics lectures. The sample consisted of 205 first-year students of the Faculty of primary education. Results of this research show that mathematical knowledge of future primary school teachers is inadequate. A prerequisite for mathematical knowledge is being familiar with a very well developed mathematical terminology and symbols without which mathematical science becomes “hard to understand”. The result of this research shows that mathematical terminology and symbols are not adequately comprehended among research participants.
