Abstract

After a short review of the primary lactase deficiency, the problem of the secondary deficiency of this brush border enzyme is presented. Among more important causes there are, especially in our country, many viral and bacterial inflammations of the small intestine, various toxic agents, especially alcohol, some drugs and chemical substances, long term starvation, parasites, intestinal resection, milk allergy, gluten enteropathy and some other rarer causes. Therefore, in the case of diarrhoea of unknown etiology, one has to think also of this disaharidase deficiency.
