Abstract

The book Die »Davidias« des Marko Marulić by the German Slavist and Latinist Winfried Baumann represents the first monographic study ever dedicated to Marulić's Davidias at home or abroad. Already the subtitle of the study - »A great epic of Dalmatian Latinity«, determines the contextual position and the.author's comparative assessment of our old writers within the framework of European literature. Baumann' s analysis focuses on two theoretic scopes: one is to identify the parallels between Marulić and Virgil, the other to analyze in detail the relation between the Davidias and its biblical model from the point of view of the contents. Baumann stresses the importance of further study of correlations running between Marulić and other contemporary works of similar genres, thematic preoccupations and treatment, like Bunić's and Vida's epic poetry. Also Baumann points to the affiliation and interdependence of poetic treatments and theologic interpretations throughout Marulić's text, confirming also in this way the consistency and value of this significant epic project.
