Abstract

The life of a ship has been limited, among other things, because she has been exposed to aggressive environments. Kinetics of corrosion on the ship's hull can be monitored properly, and there is a possibility of a prompt action. On the other hand, there are components and elements of the ship's system with significant limitations in monitoring and in the possibility of action. Among such systems is the steam piping system where the occurrence of the corrosion processes presents a hidden danger that is often neglected. The control and maintenance of the steam piping system cannot always be carried through by conventional methods because of its inaccessibility. The aim of this article is to describe the possibility of a real time monitoring of the corrosion process at inaccessible and dangerous space on board ships using fiber optic technology. A better insight into the onset and progression of corrosion by using the innovative monitoring techniques will enable an improved planned maintenance and enhance the safety of the ship and the crew.
