Abstract
Transition from school to employment is an important step in the life of every young person. What will his/her educational and work path be like depends to a large degree on a type of secondary school one has finished. The objective of the research was to begin with a systematic insight into this important transitional stage in the life of young persons (what happened after finishing secondary school and later, career development), and have insight into the potential of outputs of secondary education in the Zadar county regarding inclusion into the world of work or continuation of education. Research has been carried out on the representative sample of first cohort of respondents who finished their secondary education in the school year 2007/2008. The telephone survey method has been used, and the sample has been stratified according to school, educational programme and sex, N = 751.
Respondents from four-year secondary schools most often continue their education, while respondents from three-year schools mostly enter the labour market. Regarding respondents who continue their education it is more often that they finance their education themselves, then that their education is subsidised by the Ministry. Respondents who are employed have usually found employment through personal contacts and they most often work for the salary between 3000 and 4500 kunas. Respondents who are unemployed, in large extent become long-term unemployed and are not very active in looking for job.
