Abstract

The authors analysed competences and needs for professional development of adult trainers who teach at a distance, come from different professions and have different employment statuses. We were interested in the degree in which their competences were directed at teaching and instruction, to what degree those were related to management and organisational knowledge and skills, and to what degree they were directed by expert knowledge. We examined how much time they devote to teaching compared to other tasks (and which), and finally what influence their employment status had on their performance as adult trainers. The model was based on competence framework for teachers, counsellors and management in adult education proposed by Research voor Beleid (2009). It was adapted for distance education trainers who use ICT, and to the need to research their employment status. We used competence and needs self-evaluation. The data on the trainers’ self-image of their competences was gathered through a questionnaire and interviews. In order to ensure a balanced image of their own competences, they were asked to evaluate their need for professional development, additional education, experience and practice. The research aims to show need to keep track of competences, as well as the need for professional development, dealing with the employment status, and the use of ICT in adult education.
