Abstract

Critical pedagogy has taken most of critical theory’s postulates as its theoretical framework. Main postulates of critical theory of society are: science is a part of social activity; the goal of critical theory is to explain social context of forming social facts so that, in that way, this theory could contribute to change of social relations; methodological basis of critical theory of society is “objective understanding of purpose”; interest which guides cognition in critical theory of society is emancipation; practical discourse forms a model of social practice without subjugation and successful enlightenment.
In this paper we review attitudes of leading theorists of critical pedagogy: I. Illich, P. Freire, A. Giroux, I. Shore and J. T. Gatto. Critical pedagogy is concerned with practices of teaching and learning and appropriate educational theory, which are focused on raising critical awareness of “students” who wish to gain knowledge about architecture of dominant educational practices which are being conducted subjugating social systems.
