Abstract
The collection of paintings includes the works done by eighteen artists. It comprises 286 works of different sizes, which originate mostly from the first half of the 20th century. The majority are painted with temperas or watercolors on paper and the rest are oils on canvas. Assignment of an identifying number, along with descriptive data, to each object has been done in accordance with the numbering system that was recommended by the Museum Documentation Center in 1988. As a result, all the paintings are now registered under a uniform denotation representing the holdings of the Split Ethnographic Museum, and the records are computerized. Folklore motives played a crucial part in the formation of this collection. They have also been the basic principle in its development up to the present, when they are becoming more and more popular. These paintings primarily have cultural and historical value. They prove the interest that artists and public had in the folk art and culture. Taken as a resource in studying folk costumes and customs, they should be submitted to a careful and critical analysis.
