Abstract

In cases of acute inflammation endodontic treatment is an emergency measure and the dentist has no time to apply specific antibacterial therapy. Therefore attempts have been made to use in endodontia new agents with a wide antibacterial spectrum and as little as possible irritation of the surrounding tissue. In order to achieve this goal the possibility of introducing sulphatiazole in the treatment of inflamed root-canals has been investigated. With regard to the contradictory results of the investigations so far conducted, the purpose of our work was to compare the effect of sulphatiazole and the so-called classic antiseptics (Solutio Chlumsky, Tricresol-formalin solution) as agents serving for the relief of pain in the course of endodontic treatment. On the basis of 124 endodontic interventions in the course of which testing of pain was carried out before and after medication with sulphatiazole paste (experimental group) respectively with Solutio Chlumsky and Tricresol-formalin solution (control group) we were able to conclude that no advantage over mild antiseptic agents was to be gained by application of sulphatiazole. In some cases Tricresol-formalin caused too much irritation. The data were elaborated by the X2- If sulphatiazole is used for the medication of the root canal it should be applied to the apex in a sufficient quantity to prevent postoperative pain because of the fast resorption of the paste from the canal. We should like to mention that the choice of drugs should be made according to the clinical picture and the morphological properties of the root canal.
