Abstract
Aware of the problem and great extent of ecological disasters, as well as attempts involving ecology, the authors of this article call attention to the importance of the ecological awareness of every person on our planet and suggest opportunities for parish communities to awaken and develop ecological awareness among their members.
In 2000, the Croatian bishops approved a curriculum for parish catechesis entitled Parish Catechesis in the Renewal of the Parish Community. The curriculum requires a transition from a concerned to an involved parish community. In order to achieve such a transition, catechesis according to age group and catechesis of lively religious circles or interested communities are proposed. Among the lively circles of the faithful are special communities called ecological communities. The Croatian bishops emphasize how "such a community in our days can have a significant role in creating a more profoundly religious attitude toward the created world, which can be achieved through its own initiatives, the engagement of all parishioners (including children, young people and adults), to association with other movements outside the parish and on a broad scale.” In this light, the article discusses the opportunities for achieving ecological communities within the parish community. A one-year plan and program are presented for catechetical meetings with examples that could encourage specific initiatives, as well as the revival of catechetical communities in parish communities for the purpose of building and preserving a better world within and around ourselves.
