Abstract

This paper considers the possibilities of formulating an integral theory of design with regard to its objective evaluation. Taking into consideration recent published literature on this topic, the paper addresses some challenging issues relative to a definition of a modern as well as historical perspective on design, differentiation and the scope of the profession. Considering design primarily as a cultural phenomenon, the paper also analyses the scope of evaluation methods and proposes a basis for developing an integral theory of design according to the structural model put forward by Gui Bonsiepe.
