Abstract

Th is article deals with establishing the meaning and employment of prepositions ὑπὲρ and ἀντὶ in New Testament. In preparation for such analysis, an examination of the use of the word in some examples of Greek non-biblical literature as well as of the Septuagint has been taken. Th erefore, it has been concluded that both preposition – especially in the texts relevant for Christology – confer the idea of substitution, which implies that New Testament sees the meaning of the Christ’s death in terms of substitutionary or vicarious atonement.
