Abstract

In the early 19th century, architectural and engineering education in European countries was provided in polytechnics operating independently of the existing universities. By mid-century they were turned into technical colleges with special departments. By the end of the 19th century, technical colleges were leveled with universities in terms of their legal rights and were allowed to award doctorates in technical sciences. In Croatia, discussions about the need and justification of founding technical colleges were carried on between the Association of Engineers and Architects and the Royal National Government in the late 19th and the ea 20th centuries.
