Abstract

This paper provides archival material, in the German original and in Croatian translation, on the history of the school system at the beginning of the 19th century. The material refers to state involvement in the development of educational conditions. What can be mainly discerned from the archival materials is that the development of the system of education among the general population, i.e. among local communities, was dependent on the fi nancial capacity of these local communities, municipalities or Military Communities. As local communities were incapable of meeting such expenses, the system of education in this peripheral area lagged much behind that in the central part of the Monarchy. By the introduction of remedial schools (Wiederholungsschulen), the authorities tried to raise and strengthen the level to which the curriculum was mastered.
