Abstract

This text concerns itself with the phenomenon of FPS (First Person Shooter) games and utilization of these games as simulation tools for military training. Special focus is placed on a game called Armed Assault and its mod ACE. Also, a preliminary insight into the role of mods in creating progressively more precise simulators is developed. The army recognized the potential of commercial FPS in precise simulation of the battlefield, especially concerning the potential to use those simulations for training troops to the size of a platoon. Some views claim that playing war games causes insensitiveness of players and their construction of the war as bloodless and clean fun – these views are challenged. Operating in the context of contemporary armed forces of the AVF (All Volunteer Force) type, simulations have the potential to develop a better understanding of the military in the eyes of the civilian population. This could enhance the control of the civilian sector over the professional military.
