Abstract

In the beginning of 1977 a number of patients with unclear clinical picture and predominant abdominal colics were admitted to the Department of Internal Medicine of the General Hospital in Osijek.
After a clinical examination the patients were submitted to a series of laboratory testings. The laboratory findings of blood analysis showed that stippled cells, anaemia and reticulocytosis prevailed. In addition to the analyses of lead in blood and coproporphyrins in urine, the analyses of lead in serum, sternal punctate and the erythrocyte life by radioisotope method were carried out. The patients also underwent a stomatological examination. The changes of the oral mucosa were characterized by a grey-blue edge on the marginal part of the gingiva mucosa in the upper and lower jaws. A biopsic sample of pigmented mucous membrane was submitted to pathohistological analysis. The significance of these findings in making diagnosis in patients suspected of alimentary lead poisoning as well as the role of stomatologists in a medical team during treatment are discussed.
