Abstract

The paper presents the results of the initial phase of con-servation work on the Avarian-age metal archaeological finds from the site of Nuštar, Khuen-Belassy Mansion, dated to the second half of the 8th century. The finds are mostly artefacts made from copper-alloy and to a lesser extent iron, whereas those made from lead, silver and gold are rare. In the course of conservation it was established and documented that they had been painted, gilded and intentionally patinated. The artefacts demonstrate a supreme level of workmanship and a high aesthetic value. Conservation has been ongoing since 2011, in the collaboration of the Croatian Conservation Institute and the Vinkovci Town Museum, and financed by the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Croatia. Although it is only after the conservation that a comprehensive overview and presentation will be possible, these initial works already contribute to a better understanding of the Avarian technology of metal artefacts production.
