Abstract

This paper places Gavella’s analysis of Croatian theater within the context of certain existing models of writing theatrical history (biographies and monographs, theatrical-historical synthesis, documentaries, and memoirs). The author shows how Gavella introduced a twist into the traditional way of thinking and writing about Croatian theatrical history, methodology, subjects of interest and many conclusions (a detachment from sequencing facts, refraining from recording his own stake in the theater’s history, focusing on issues of structure and style, shifts in determination of period distributions...), as well as how the book Croatian theater essentially influenced later considerations of Croatian Theatrical history, how it changed the general view on it, and how it directed the attention of Croatian theatrical historiography towards new areas.
