Abstract
Are the media friends or foes of the family? Do they bring entertainment and information to the family, the basic cell of society and the Church, or do they destroy family values and threaten family unity? The article addresses these issues on the basis of Church documents concerning the relationship between the media and the family. It analyses papal messages for World Communications Day that speak about the impact of the media on the family, as well as guidelines given by the Church to members of the media in relation to the family and to family members in relation to the media. It is emphasized that responsibility and media education are key words in numerous Church documents about the media. Noting that the media influence various processes within the family, the article reflects on ways to improve the coexistence of the family and the media, with particular emphasis on the importance of media literacy.
