Abstract

The article gives a general survey of research work on problems of bilingualism carried out by Yugoslav researchers. The author restricts her survey to works regarding the phenomena of bilingualism among Yugoslav nations and nationalities, among members of Yugoslav national minorities in neighbouring countries and among migrants of Yugoslav origin in different parts of the world.
After an attempt at delimitating the field of research from the viewpoint of individual scientific disciplines and in regard to the interdisciplinary scientific approach, the author gives a short history of research on bilingualism in which she describes the basic motives which have stimulated scientific interest and work in this field in Yugoslavia.
Taking into consideration the particular aspects of bilingualism which have been the focus of interest of researchers, their works are grouped into three categories: 1) research into socially conditioned changes in the structure of languages in contact; 2) research on cognitive, personal and speech characteristics of the bilingual individual; 3) research investigating the correlation between bilingualism and the social structure of individual ethnic groups, or else the dynamics of bilingual interaction in multilingual societies.
