Abstract

During October and November a field survey was carried out in the wider area of Sotin, in a narrow space between the Danube and the present-day road connecting Vukovar and Ilok. A total of 32 positions documented on that occasion yielded finds from all chronological periods.
Finds from the Neolithic (the Starčevo and Sopot cultures) were particularly abundant, as well as from the Eneolithic (the Baden culture), Bronze Age (Belegiš I-II cultures), Late Iron Age and the Middle Ages. In view of the surface finds of potsherds and daub, we can conclude that these belong to habitation sites. Certain sites yielded a large concentration of surface finds from various periods, which might point to multi-layered settlements, like the one at Srednje polje in Sotin. The aim of the field survey is the creation of the archaeological topography of the Vukovar-Ilok area.
