Abstract

The paper examines developmental characteristics of children in middle childhood in the context of foreign language teaching and learning. Middle childhood is a period between six and eleven years of age. Those ages match the beginning of primary schooling and the transition into middle schooling in the Croatian education system. The period is therefore also called “early age”. Language teaching methodology at that age needs to take into account specific characteristics of cognitive, emotional, and social development of children in middle childhood. The paper examines eleven development-based characteristics and provides clear implications for early foreign language learning and teaching.
