Abstract

Tourism is an extremely important component of the national economies of many countries. According to estimates by the State Institute of Statistics, Tourism in Croatia makes up to 20% of GDP. In recent years, Croatia has become a popular tourist destination and is one of the few countries that did not decrease the tourist traffic. It is regularly ranked in the top 20 world’s most desirable destinations. The main tourist attractions of Croatia are preserved natural environment, cultural and historical heritage, rugged coastline, mild Mediterranean climate and long tourist tradition. Country has determined for quality rather than mass tourism. The goal is to get number of 12 million tourists in the next period and not exceed it in order to ensure sustainable development. Turning to quality tourism, Croatia allows the development and further investment in various forms of selective tourism among which emphasizes ecotourism that allows local people to realize benefit from the ecological, economic and cultural sense. This is exactly the reason why a growing number of of entrepreneurs focuses toward to ecotourism. The slogan that represents Croatia in international tourism market is ‘’The Mediterranean as it once was’’.
