Abstract

Between 2005 and 2009 research was performed into the mantis fauna (Dictyoptera: Mantodea) in Croatia, consisting of 9 species. From samples of mantises and their oothecae that were collected at 36 sites, a short description of 8 species and a description and photographs of the oothecae of 6 species are provided. All the species are found in the Mediterranean and sub-Mediterranean parts of the Republic of Croatia. They inhabit dry, warm habitats, particularly stony grassland. Mantis religiosa is to be found in appropriate
habitats throughout the inland part of Croatia. The species Iris oratoria forms part of the mantis fauna of Croatia only according to literature data, but the species Bolivaria brachyptera was recorded for the first time for the fauna of the Republic of Croatia in the Mediterranean area.
