Abstract

In 14th century already several brotherhoods were registered in Split. Each brotherhood had its own rules the brethren had to abide by, if they wished to continuie being their members. This supplement reveals the Statutes of the four brotherhoods from Veli Varoš (a part of Split) from 17th and 18th centuries. Their particular value lies in the Croatian language written at the time contributing thus to the linguistic researches. St. Cross’ (Sv. Križ) and St. Nicholas’ (Sv. Nikola) brotherhoods have preserved the so called »strips« (»opute«) listing the brethren on a long strip of calf leather written also in Croatian reealing a series of names and surnames of the Veli Varoš inhabitants. These lists are also important for the study of the language of the time, for demographic researches and for the history of Split.
