Abstract
Sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) is a field crop of crucial importance for edible oil production, both worldwide and in the Republic of Croatia. In the period from 2004 to 2013, sunflower was produced on 24 million hectares/year in the world, with the average grain yield of 1.40 t/ha. In Croatia, during the mentioned period, sunflower was grown on 33 086 hectares/year, with the total average grain yield of 2.55 t/ha. The Agricultural Institute Osijek focuses on sunflower breeding in order to create hybrids with high and stable grain yield and oil content, as well as with wide adaptability. Development of domestic hybrids, with good agronomic characteristics, contributes to advancement of domestic sunflower production and processing. Insreasing arable land, using modern agricultural techniques along with highly productive hybrids with improved grain quality will ensure environmentally acceptable sunflower production i.e. production of quality and safe food. Since sunflower products have high nutritional and medicinal value, regular consumption of such products contributes to the prevention of many cardiovasular diseases.
