Abstract

During the course of centuries in the littoral of Makarska the kitchen with an open fireplace was the center of internal life and the fundamental element of native architecture. The paper describes the genesis of such fireplaces from prehistoric times to our days. The most interesting feature of this coastal region are the words used for single items which may be found in these kitchens and which vary even from village to village. They are borrowings taken over from Italian or provincialisms. The objects themselves, made of metal, wood or burshwood, were acquired at village markets and produced by local craftmen.
