Abstract

Protonation of l-isopropyl-D5 /SO2CIF leads initially to the ipso (C-l) protonated naphthalenium ion, which slowly rearranges irreversibly at -80 °C to the C4-protonated 2-isopropyl- D5(Me)-l-methylnaphthalenium cation, the two alkyl groups having thus exchanged positions. A similar exchange does not occur in the case of 1-ethyl- 2-methyl-naphthalenium cation. A possible mechanism for this unique rearrangement is discussed.
