Abstract

In this paper Ivana Brlić-Mažuranić’s “A Book for Youth” is interpreted in the context of social and artistic tendencies that characterised Croatian literature during the 1920s. “A Book for Youth” is interpreted as the author’s testimony to the times she lived in, but also as a reflection of the “sign of the times” of an era during which it was published. The term “sign of the times” is taken from Zoran Kravar’s theory in which he identifies specific ideologi¬cal and artistic thoughts in Croatian culture and society during and after the First World War. Although it would seem at first that “A Book for Youth” is characterised by antimodernist deliberations, the author’s views are much more complex and cannot be restricted to simply antimodernist reasoning.
