Abstract

The author considers sacred architecture as the transcendence of matter into the spiritual value of the most noble humanity. After an examination of the values realised in the architecture of historic churches and problems in recent creations, the author defi nes two basic conditions without which no sacred building can be built: the fi rst is the need for the existance of the spirit of sacred space, and the second is the creation of the architecture of a church, and not the creation of a church for architecture. The author’s design and construction of the Church of St. Nikola Tavelić in Rijeka (1989) and the Church of Blessed Augustin Kažotić in Zagreb (1998 – 2013) represent an excellent interpretation and materialization of his understanding of the conditions necessary to transcend matter into spiritual worth.
