Abstract

In this paper we start from the assumption that the value of forests will depend increasingly on their generally useful functions and that there is a need to investigate possibilities of their quantitative evaluation. The value of wood and wood products depends on the laws of supply and demand, whereas the services concerning the generally useful functions of forests have been presented descriptively. Because of this, there is a need of economic evaluation of environment's goods and services concerning the evaluation of ecological forest economy. The same goes for programmes of protection and advancement of environment as such, which also include the ecological analysis and technological solutions. In this sense, the cost–benefit analysis seems to be the most appropriate. The travel costs method is being suggested for the evaluation of generally useful functions of forests.
