Abstract

Biological nitrogen fixation in legume cultivation has an important role in sustainable agriculture production. An important forage legume is the field pea (Pisum sativum L.). Together with nitrogen-fixing bacteria Rhizobium leguminosarum sv. viciae and Rhizobium pisi, field peas provide use of abundant amounts of atmospheric nitrogen, the limiting factor in agricultural production. In order to increase the utilization of biological nitrogen fixation, the inoculation of forage pea seeds is recomended. It is assumed that herbicide treatment poses a potential threat to the activity of symbiotic fixing bacteria in the soil , so it is necessary to determine their impact on the growth of nitrogen-fixing bacteria. The aim of the study is to analyse the effects of different concentrations of herbicides imazamox, pendimethalin and clomazone on growth of ten R. leguminosarum sv. viciae and R.pisi strains. The results reveal a significant effect of herbicide clomazone on the majority of tested strains, because it inhibited growth of strains R. leguminosarum sv. viciae 1001, Kž 16 and R.pisi 30132 and decreased growth of strains Kž 23 i Kž 24. The inhibitory effect of clomazone on strain growth was determined only at the highest herbicide concentration (10 000 ppm). The negative effect of imazamox and pendimethalin on the growth of tested strains has not been determined.
