; Skupština Brčko distrikta Bosne i Hercegovine
Abstract
Distributive trade covers all forms of commercial activities, starting with the purchase of goods from the manufacturer, to its sales to the fi nal consumer. In states or their political and administrative units, distributive trade is one of the most important economic sectors. Th is paper discusses the role of distributive trade in generating added value
in the Brčko District. First, it explains the basic characteristics of distributive trade as an economic activity and the concept of added value. Second, a quantitative data analysis of generated added value in the distributive trade sector and its sub-sectors (trade of motor vehicles, wholesale and retail) is performed on the example of the Brčko District of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bosnia and Herzegovina, the European Union and its Member States. Appropriate indicators are identifi ed. Next, a comparative analysis of the indicators is performed and conclusions on the role of distributive trade in generating added value in the Brčko District are made. Research results show a great importance of this economic activity in generating gross domestic product in the Brčko District. More than 1/3 of added value in non-fi nancial economic activity, i.e. approx. 1/4 of added value in the whole economy of the Brčko District of BiH is generated in distributive trade. Possible reasons for this could be due to a large number of customers (end users) from smaller surrounding municipalities who do their shopping in Brčko District of BiH, as well to minor contributions
from the manufacturing industry in generating added value.
