Abstract
While voice changes might be caused by a dysfunction of the thyroid gland, they can also be the result of damage to the laryngeal nerves during thyroidectomy. Such surgical complications occur in 1 out of every 10 patients undergoing thyroidectomy. The aim of this study was to determine whether the parameters of voice quality are changed following thyroidectomy. For this purpose, two forms of voice assessment were used: a subjective method (voice self-assessment using the Voice Handicap Index - VHI) and an objective method (acoustic voice analysis). Testing was conducted at two time points: immediately before thyroidectomy and two to three months after the thyroidectomy. The results demonstrated difference between subjective assessments made before and after thyroidectomy. However, these differences were not statistically significant. Acoustic analysis indicated that there was a statistically significant difference only in the variable shimmer (SHIMM).
