Abstract

Modal analysis is a standard method for a structure earthquake response analysis. The combination of various response modes is not standardized and there are three most often used methods of modal superposition: ABS, SRSS and CQC. Exact results of seismic response are obtained by time history analysis, we using a set of representative earthquakes. In order to evaluate the validity of different superposition methods, were defined building models that cover a broad range of interest regarding stiffness (and its distribution along the height and in floor) and their response time histories were analyzed for a set of ground motions that represent soft and stiff ground. The suggestions for everyday use were outlined.
