Abstract

Different types and degrees of visual impairments take part in occurrence of difficulties in motor, social and emotional functioning. Unfavourable social context, inability to achieve a complete insight into one's own physical manifestation, as well as the presence of misbalance between “imaginary” and “real” self-image of blind and low vision persons, may cause many negative effects in the area od body image and self-experience. With that in mind, the aim of the research was to test the influence of dance movement therapy on the body image of low vision adolescent girls. The research was conducted on a sample of 5 low vision adolescent girls which were situated in the Centre of rehabilitation “Vinko Bek”. Variables that are related to mechanisms of coping with body image and a relation between body image experience and quality of life were defined for the research purposes. The obtained data were processed by method of quantum changes under the model differences between the two time points. The results show that using of dance movement therapy induced an improvement in some dimension of body image on the sample included in this investigation. The results also indicate the need for further researches related to coherence between different types and degrees of visual impairments and changes in body-image by using dance movement therapy as a complementary method in education and rehabilitation.
