Abstract

The question that has been posed by Jews on Jesus’ origins (Jn 7:42) points towards conflicts and debates between Jewish political and religious groups, as well as between Judeo-Christian community and disciples of John the Baptist. It has finally led to the most important schism between the Church and synagogue. Through criticalhistorical method, textual and literary critique and minute exegesis and theological interpretation, this article tries to elucidate further theological and historical meaning of this Biblical verse (Jn 7:42), its narrower and wider context, and to explore specificities of John’s technique in hard discussions about Jesus as Christ (Messiah, the Anointed One).
