Abstract

This paper discusses the urban transformation of Šibenik in the period 1945 -1990. The processes of industrialisation and urbanisation are contextualised within the period of socialism in Croatia. In this period Šibenik experienced a signifi cant urban transformation; the population increased 2.7 times and it significantly expanded. However, the urbanocentric model of development, which had elements of state policy, produced some negative effects as well: dominance of industrialisation over urbanisation, spatial expansion crisis, environmental pollution, town centre decay, suburbanisation in new city neighbourhoods, housing shortage and population decline in the hinterland of Šibenik.
