Abstract

The aim of this paper is to present an overview of the activities of a school librarian in the primary school and to point out his/her contribution to the development of the Croatian primary school educational system based on the recommendations from the Standard for School Libraries, the Library Act and supporting legislation, the Curriculum for Primary Schools, etc. The implementation of information literacy programmes in primary schools also ensures the basic rights and obligations of the child. The role of the expert library associate in primary schools is to prepare pupils for lifelong learning and to help them become the kind of readers who will understand the importance of literary works and language diversities as well as the importance of printed and digital communication media: books and e-books, magazines and emagazines, photographs, comics, sound recordings, AV-materials, the Internet, and the importance of interculturalism and multiculturalism in their environment.
