Abstract

This is an occasional paper which reports on the events that led to the foundation of the highest scientific institution in the Republic of Croatia. Josip Juraj Strossmayer’s role is particularly emphasized, not only through his financing, but also in relation to his cultural and political activity. The paper brings back the memory of the first Slavonian Fellows and their role in the Academy’s history. The concluding part of the paper discusses the contemporary role of the Academy, especially its opposition to the aspirations to permeate the entire society by superficiality. The author strongly supports the cooperation of all important institutions in the Republic of Croatia.
