Abstract

The Church of St. Michael at Mihovljan near Čakovec is known to have existed already in the 13'" century, and at the beginning of the 15'" a new, possibly aisled church, endowed by Hermman of Celje, was built. According to contemporary descriptions and fragments of architectural decoration, it has been possible to reconstruct the type of the vault and an approximate size of the sanctuary. The latter was covered by a rare type of tassel vault, such as we can see at Maribor and Ljutomer, two structures built at practically the same moment. Thus the church at Mihovljan embodied influences from the two biggest building sites in the neighboring Styria, those of the church at Ptujska Gora, by the way of Lepoglava, and of the new presbytery of the parish church at Maribor. Other fragments allow for a reconstruction of the nave, leaving open a possibility that it was accompanied by aisles.
