Abstract

Organic synthetic dyes and pigments are used in different aspects of human activities as for example in toners and inks for all kinds of printers. Due to inadequate toner and ink disposal after they have been used, environmental pollution can primarily occur in soil, surface and underground waters. In the case that such waste is disposed into the environment without prior adequate treatment, it could pose a hazard for the environment due to the content of non-biodegradable and toxic chemical compounds. In this study the application of relatively cheap coagulation/flocculation method for removal of pigments from wastewater which is prepared by dispersion of dust of used toner in water is examined. As coagulants aluminium(III) sulphate and iron(III) chloride were used. Their concentrations and pH values were optimised. Their efficiency was compared on the basis of ecological and economical indicators.
