Abstract

In vie» o f s ome recent studies, Babić's state»>ent to the authorities themselves.
that ».. . the 1890 — 1914 period.. . has no common characteristics
in the f ie/d of visual arts .. »» appears to >equive a
correction, first of all concerning the time period between
1890 and 1910. At the same time, pluralisn> of Croatian Modernism
should be identified, thus also of »isua/ art modcrnis>
n, as x»e// as a constitutive principle of the epoch manifesting
a complex historical unity, a specific historical structure
of the moment and relations of vavious»isms«, traditional/
y called Modernism. Constituting a separate entity,
the Croatian visual arts f ron> the turning of the centuries
cannot be si>np/y included either i n the 19th or the 20th
century a Ione. Al l t hi s wo u/ d i n dicate that the turning
period of the centuries does not di»ide the 19th and the
20th century but links the>n together, showing the>n to make,
/ikewise Europe, a uniform macro-epoch. Thevefove, they
should be historically considered as a uni ty, due to their co excitens.
