Abstract

The paper presents the case of a sudden early menopause in a 19-year-old adolescent after single use of ergometrine that she had been taking because of repeated hypermenorrhagia. She had been treated for polyhypermenorhoeas of early menarche since the age of 10.5 with combined estrogen-progestin preparations. Other factors for sudden secondary hypergonadotropic amenorrhea from personal and family history and laboratory and clinical treatment could not be found. Apart from the accidental use of ergometrine, sudden emergence of secondary amenorrhea is being discussed and evident ovarian failure following possible strong vasoconstriction and side effects of ergotalkaloid use.
